FORM OF MAKING SUGGESTION
Could ...?
Could ... is
a modal verb which we can use to make a suggestion. We suggest a person,
friend or someone else to do something.
How to use:
1. Situation: You need to buy some
books, but you don't have enough money.
Our suggestion: You could talk to your father and
ask him to give you some money.
Let's
Suggestions are used when we are
deciding to do something with other people, or giving them advice on
different situations.
HOW TO GIVE SUGGEST
1. Situation: A friend says he is very
bored.
Your suggestion: Let's go
out and drink coffee.
2. Situation: Your wife says your children are not happy today.
Your suggestion: Let's take
them to cinema.
Positive form: Let's
+ verb1
- Let's
play tennis.
- Let's
go on a picnic.
Negative form: Let's +
not+ verb1
- Let's not play
tennis.
- Let's not go
on a picnic.
Example Sentences:
- A: What
are we doing now?
B:Let’s go home.
- Let's take the
children to the park.
- Let's carry on
this discussion at some other time, shall we?
- Let's go to
the cinema after work, okay?
- Let's not go on holiday in August -
it'll be too hot.
- Let's not stay home and watch TV. There is a concert today.
- Let's play a game.
- Why wait? Let's leave now.
Why don't... / Why doesn't...
How to use:
1. Situation: Your mother says she
feels tired.
Your suggestion: Mom, why
don't you go to bed early today?
2. Situation: Your friend says his wife can't decide which cellphone
to buy.
Your suggestion: Why doesn't
she go to a techno shop and look at all models.
Example Sentences:
- A: I have a headache.
B: Why don't you take an
aspirin?
- Why don't you call her?
- Why don't we have a rest?
- Why doesn’t Sam go to a dentist?
- Why doesn’t he go to a dentist
- Why don't they come to
Istanbul with me?
- Why don't you ring Sam and
ask him to the cinema?
- Why doesn't your sister take a
rest?
- Why doesn't dad go to bed?
- Why doesn't she come with us?
would be
form: would be + adjective (great, wonderful, nice
...) + to infinitive + verb
How to use:
1. Situation: Your brother and you
don't like staying at home.
Your suggestion: It would be
great to go to park and play there.
1. Situation: You and your friends are bored of studying English all
day.
Your suggestion: It would be
nice to see a film.
Example Sentences:
- It
would be great to be with my best friends now.
- It
would be wonderful to walk home with her.
- It
would be nice to have a 10 day vacation.
should
form: should + verb1
How to use:
1. Situation: A friend says she
cannot sleep.
Your suggestion: You should take a hot shower
or drink some milk.
2. Situation: It is getting late.
Your suggestion: We should go home now.
Example Sentences:
- A: I have a headache.
B: You should take an aspirin.
- If you have
problems, you should call him and talk about
them.
- You
look very tired. You should take a rest.
- He has
a terrible toothache. He should go to a dentist.
- You should go home early tonight. Your mother is very angry at you.

When
making offers we use the following phrases:
1.
Can/ shall/ will+ I + Infinitive
E.g.can/ shall/ will I open the door for you?
2.
Would you like + noun
Would you like to + verb
E.g. would you like some tea?
Would you like to drink some tea?
3.
Would you like me to + Infinitive
E.g. Would you like me to make some tea for you?
4. How about + noun
E.g. How about some cake?
